WHERE WE GO

BRIEF ITINERARY

Day 1

Start your adventure at Stone Gorge Pass (Shixiaguan), 5 km from Badaling. There are high mountains, deep gullies, and dangerous passes, the Great Wall and the Walls are connected, and the piers are facing each other. The original preservation is full of broken walls. Tonight, we'll move to Huanghuacheng part of the Great Wall and sleep in the Good Fortune hostel or camp on the Great Wall there.

Day 3

The Jiankou Great Wall is the most famous wild Great Wall in Beijing. Many classic photos of the Great Wall publicized by the Great Wall are taken here. This section of the Great Wall is backed by steep mountains and has not been artificially renovated. It looks very simple and natural and is an excellent place for photography. The middle section is the most quintessential area of the Jiankou Great Wall, with many dangerous and beautiful landscapes such as Beijing knot, eagle flying upside down, and ladders.

Day 3

From Jiankou, journey through scenery right out of Mutianyu. The Great Wall at Mutianyu is built on a cliff's edge, which is a dangerous place to live. The Great Wall at Mutianyu also has a "Spur Wall," a high ridge mountain beam on the outside and inside the Great Wall. It is the only one of the most popular places globally, and it is one of the most popular sites in the world. A few meters to dozens of meters, and the enemy building built here, the locals called "knife to the building." Try toboggan slide down from the Wall. Transfer to Gubeikou. Camp on the Great Wall for the second night.

Day 4

Explore Gubeikou, which is the access from the North China Plain to Inner Mongolia Plateau. Since ancient times, it has been known as the Xiongjiao, a place where "the throat is strangled and tends to the Shuozi Desert, and the sky stays locked and keyed and pillows the Xiongguan." The most recent fighting took place in 1933. That year Japanese troops invaded Beijing from Gubeikou and fought the Chinese defenders, killing more than 5,000 people on both sides. Overnight in a hotel at Jinshanling.

Day 5

Hike 3 hours from Jinshanling to West Simatai. See both the Wall in the deteriorated wild state to the restored. Here the terrain is low, easy to attack, and hard to defend, the Wall is very thick and robust, the beacon tower is majestic and tall, the fortress is scattered with densely packed buildings and towers. Intensively, there are 158 of them. We will drive to Huangyaguan Peace Fort complete the last section of the Great Wall in this trip tomorrow. Overnight in a hotel at Huangyuaguan.

Day 6

Enjoy a four-hour hike from the Peace Fort to Huangyaguan Pass and the Sky Ladder, a stunning section of the Great Wall known for its steepness and beauty. The Pass is flanked by sheer cliffs and rugged hills, creating a formidable defense that is called "one man's barrier, ten thousand men's barrier." At dusk, the sun casts a golden glow on the peaks, giving the Pass its name of Yellow Cliff Pass.

We did it! We conquered the Great Wall in six amazing days of adventure and discovery. We are so proud of ourselves and each other for this incredible feat. We can't wait to get back to Beijing and celebrate our victory. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never forget.

DETAILED TREK ITINERARY

Day 1: Shixiaguan-Badaling

Day 1: Shixiaguan-Badaling

Day 1: Shixiaguan-Badaling

Shixiaguan (Stone Gorge) Pass, 5km southwest of the Badaling section of the Great Wall. It is one of the most intact parts of the whole Great Wall. Despite severe damage, the winding wall set in the lofty mountains reveals its grandeur. The wall remains relatively untouched because of its strategic location. The pass was initially built in the reign of Ming Emperor Wanli(about 1600 AD), which was then a key pass guarded by a largen number of soldiers.

INCLUDED

Meals: B,L,D

Accommodation: Good Fortune Inn or camping on the Great Wall at Huanghuacheng

Day 2: Jiankou Trekking

Day 1: Shixiaguan-Badaling

Day 1: Shixiaguan-Badaling

Jiankou is the part where the shape of the mountain looks like an arrow, with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock. It is known for its ruggedness and wild beauty, and you will be in awe of the marvelous views it affords. As soon as we reach Jiankou, we will see a deserted watchtower that gives you a panoramic view of the entire valley. In the early morning, the view is priceless with its morning fog.

Once we descend from the Great Wall, we will spend the night at a farmer’s inn.

INCLUDED

Meals: B, L, D

Accommodation: Laohe's Inn

Day 3: Jiankou to Mutianyu

Day 1: Shixiaguan-Badaling

Day 4: Jinshanling to West Simatai

From Jiankou, we will cross over onto Mutianyu, a section of the Wall that has been largely rebuilt in the 1980s. Although it has gotten a face-lift, it avoids the army of tourists that plague Badaling. Mutianyu offers some breathtaking views of the valley and wall below, and if you look to your right, you’ll see a large sign engraved in the side of the mountain, encouraging you to “Cherish the teachings of Chairman Mao.” Mutianyu has also become famous for visiting foreign leaders and celebrities.

INCLUDED

Meals: B, L, D

Accommodation: Good Fortune Inn

Day 4: Jinshanling to West Simatai

Day 4: Jinshanling to West Simatai

Day 4: Jinshanling to West Simatai

Our hike will start from Simatai, and we will make our way west along the wall into Jinshanling. This is the classic Great Wall that hikers are very thrilled about. Wall enthusiasts have done. The Wall runs from deteriorated wild state to the restored in the end to allow hikers to compare the differences between the two wall status.

Tonight, we will camp on the Great Wall in an ancient watchtower.

INCLUDED

Meals: B, L, D

Accommodation: Camping on the Wall

Day 5: Gubeikou-Jinshanling

Day 4: Jinshanling to West Simatai

Day 5: Gubeikou-Jinshanling

Gubeikou is mostly Wild Wall. It was first built during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-557) and rebuilt in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). There are 172 watchtowers, 14 beacon towers, 16 passes, 3 water passes, 3 barbarians, and 6 fortresses along it.

In 1933, the Chinese army fought against Japanese invasion troops at Gubeikou. In the four-month-long battles, over 5,000 Japanese soldiers and 9,000 Chinese soldiers died. You can see that Gubeikou is not merely a relic. It remained a battlefield in the modern world, although it got more smushed by Japanese airplane bombers.

We will drive to Huangyaguan in the late afternoon.

INCLUDED

Meals: B, L

Accommodation: Huangyaguan Hotel or similar

Day 6: Huangyaguan

Day 4: Jinshanling to West Simatai

Day 5: Gubeikou-Jinshanling

Today we'll start with Peace Fort (Taipingzhai) that begins from Banlagang Mountain in the east and arriving at Guafu Tower (Widow Tower) in the west. There are six watchtowers, one battlement, and one shortcut leading to the wall.

Waking westward, we will get to the steepest segment of this section, the Huangya Sky Ladder.  This long stairway stretches to the top of the ridge, seemingly leads to the sky. Climbing over the ladder, we will reach the primitive Great Wall built in the Northern Qi Dynasty, marking the end of the  Huangyaguan section.

We will return to Beijing in the afternoon.
