FOR AN ENHANCED WALKING EXPERIENCE:
Extra 3.5-hour self-guided hiking from Jinshaling to West Simatai with our private transfer on Day 2 for just an addtional US$50/person (lunch will be served after the hike). This part of the Great Wall is renowned for its unique features and historical significance. Constructed during the Ming Dynasty, it spans approximately 10.5 kilometers, with 67 watchtowers, five passes, and three beacon towers. This section is particularly noted for its well-preserved architecture that showcases advanced engineering techniques of the time. Its strategic importance is highlighted by its intricate design, which served as a formidable defense against invasions. Jinshanling's remote location and the natural deterioration towards Simatai give it a tranquil, authentic atmosphere, making it a paradise for photographers and hikers alike. The combination of restored paths and untouched stretches allows visitors to experience both the Great Wall's majestic past and its raw beauty.
SEASONAL FACTOR
During the summer months (May 1 – October 1), the hike can typically be completed before 11:00 am due to the early sunrise between 4:30 and 5:30 am. This allows you the option to catch an earlier bus back to Beijing at 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm, avoiding the need to wait for train S504 at 5:00 pm.
In spring, fall, and winter, however, sunrise is later—around 7:00 to 7:30 am—so the hike starts later, usually around 8:00 or 9:00 am. As a result, you’ll likely return on the S504 train in the afternoon.
